Healthcare EHR Redesign
Product rewrite / redesign - modernizing the healthcare interface using UX best practices while upgrading to React and optimizing for iPad Mini
Value to client:
Browser-based web app making updates and logins quick and efficient
Decreased loading times for the user
Offline ability to continue virtual work and documentation even in older medical buildings or patients’ homes
Modern look leverages aesthetic-usability effect
Problem
Request to transition from Local App to Web App (will impact speed to update to market)
Lost work / needing to re-do work due to internet connection loss and no offline capabilities
Dated look and non-intuitive workflows leading to inefficiency
We believe by rewriting to React, providing offline mode, modernizing the UI, and optimizing for iPad Mini, physical / speech / occupational therapists will experience increased efficiency and satisfaction which will lead to both client retention and acquisition for “COmpany”.

Deliverables
-
Navigation - Before
Navigation is seen on the top of the site. It is small and difficult to read. Also, some navigation items shifted to different locations within the menu depending on the type of site.
-
Navigation - After
Solution: Implementation of a side navigation driven by information architecture and hierarchy
Value: decrease cognitive load, increase muscle memory, increase consistency
-
Heuristics - Before
User pain points:
- Non-intuitive scheduling
- Small font
- Difficult to navigate
- Most important features are on the same visual priority level as less important features
-
Heuristics - After
- Promoting intuitive system understanding using typography/ color theory/ iconography
Heuristics Addressed:
- Visibility of system status (breadcrumbs, toast notifications)
- User control and freedom (clear exit buttons, action confirmation modals)
- Consistency and standards (via design system, matching sensible COM functionality)
- Error prevention (action confirmation modals, specific placement of cancel/delete buttons)
- Recognition rather than recall (data persistence)
- Flexibility and efficiency of use (menus for novice users, click/double click for expert users)
- Aesthetic and minimalist design (reducing unnecessary elements)
- Help and documentation (tool tips and informative design)
Value: decrease cognitive load, increase muscle memory, increase consistency
-
Informative Design - Before
The application had many legends - some persistent on the screen and some needed to be summoned. The icons make sense to users over time, but onboarding new users meant many references to the legend. Not ideal and quite outdated.
-
Informative Design - After
- Removing legends and instead incorporating informative design elements like chips
- The allowed the user to not have to reference a legend in a different part of the screen which saves time and reduces cognitive load.
Innovation
Neudesic consultants are always seeking ways to innovate and allow our clients to be first to market with new technology. As a leader in AI, we felt well-equipped to suggest an AI assistant to ensure notes met the industry standards.
And lastly, delight
The team found various opportunities to use light-hearted illustrations and more compassionate copyright that matched the overall feeling of physical, speech, and occupational therapy. These therapists spend their days caring for others. Helping them walk again, helping them talk again, and helping them recover and progress. We wanted them to feel like the same compassion and care was put into the application!
